Yesterday was a really long, really fun and really cheap day!
We started off at Le Brea Tar Pits and Page Museum, because it was the first Tuesday of the month we got in for free. Lots of the tar pits that they are excavating are still there bubbling away outside and the museum displays all the bones that they have pulled out of the pits over the past hundred years.
Then visited El Pueblo de Los Angeles - a little old Mexican part of the city where the oldest building in LA is standing {free entry}. It wasn't quite as good as Old Town in San Diego though, and didn't take too long to look around the little market stalls, so we had time to fit in one last stop: The Autry Museum {had a buy one get one free entry coupon}.
It was our favourite stop of the day - kind of a combination of the Heard Museum and the Buffalo Bill Museum with all the upstairs dedicated to Native Americans and the downstairs about the Frontier and Wild West.
We saw Annie Oakley's Gun, lots of Katsina Dolls, a recreation of the shootout at the O.K. Corral and lots of Winchester guns.
The we got to Universal Studios for 4pm ready to watch the live taping of Guys with Kids. It was really fun, but went on for AGES! We didn't get out until 11pm because the babies kept crying and they would have to keep switching babies and re-shooting the scene.
$10 for a whole day's entertainment. Not bad.
Today was a lot more relaxed - we went to the Third Street Promenade, which is the shopping district in Santa Monica. Dan bought some new Converse and I got another $5 t-shirt from Roxy! Then went over to Marina Del Ray and walked by the canals, and back along the beach to our apartment. Dan managed to get beach tar all over his foot {and then his hand} after kicking up the sand. He thought he was going to die! But after some googling we found that cooking oil can dissolve it so it all came off in the end.
After a short break we went for a bike ride along the beach, walked along Santa Monica Pier and then watched the sun set {behind the clouds} before going back to the apartment.
Now we're packing and getting ready to drive to Las Vegas tomorrow.
